Samsung Galaxy S9 — What You Need To Know

Yesterday Samsung announced the details of it’s latest flagship phone, the Samsung Galaxy S9 (and S9+). Rather than you having to read stacks of spec sheets and articles to find out what’s new and if it’s worth upgrading to, I’ve written this quick summary.

So, what are the important things:

  1. The Camera
This is the biggest feature of the S9. The camera has gone dual lens for even better photo’s. It works better in low light and has a super slow motion mode (an amazing 960 frames per second in 720p and 480fps in 1080p, that’s nuts for a phone!).
  2. And I reckon that’s about it…

Yes, as expected it has a quicker processor etc but the S9 isn’t hugely different to the S8. It looks and feel very similar to the S8, with just minor changes like the fingerprint scanner being moved, and slightly smaller bezels. And a bit like Apple did with Animoji on the iPhone X, Samsung have introduced AR Emoji. Rather than cartoon animals though, it creates an Emoji version of yourself. All good fun for about 5 minutes but that’s about it.

So the S9 is very much an incremental upgrade, so if you’ve got a S8 it probably isn’t worth changing unless you’re massively into photography. I’m not saying it’s a bad phone as it certainly isn’t; It’s a great phone, it’s just that so is the existing S8 is supercedes.

Pricewise, the S9 has gone up slightly compared to the S8 (which you should now be able to get some great deals on). In the UK the S9 is £750 and the S9+ is £838 if bought outright without a contract.

Thanks

Richard
