A mistake I see all the time with social media videos

Welcome to 1 Minute Marketing Monday! This week’s tip is about social media videos and a mistake I see people making all the time.

So what’s the mistake? People looking at themselves on their smartphone screen, rather than looking at the camera lens when recording a video. Why is this such a mistake? To the viewer, it looks like you are looking over their shoulder rather than at them. Imagine how unsettling this would be if you were sat with them in person.

Here are a couple of screengrabs from a video I recorded to illustrate the point.

Firstly, here’s what it looks like when looking at the lens as you should do:

And then while looking at myself on the screen while recording:

Hopefully, that gets the point across and you found this tip to be useful :)

A lot of people do find it difficult not to look at themselves when recording a video, especially when they first start making them. So a simple little trick is to cover the screen so it’s impossible to do so! You can do this easily with a post-it note, a folded piece of paper, or a cloth (cleaning cloths for glasses are perfect).

Feel free to add your comments or questions over in the Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/305509607053228/ where I’ll be adding an example of this with a video later today.

Thanks

Richard
